PowerDental, a simple open source dentistry software

I’m starting a new work as system administrator of a dentist office (Studio Dentistico – Stefania Rinaldi). I’m proud to announce that it will run Linux in both server and clients, in order to reduce licensing and hardware costs and to have a more robust platform.

The drawback of this choice is the little number of software that could be implemented, so I’d like to create a simple MySQL/PHP application. Being server-side, it’s clearly a cross-platform program and could also implemented in remote server and sold in outsourcing.

For those interested in the source or in helping me in the development, please, write me at telatin at cribi.unipd.it, specifying PowerDental as subject.

Bye!

How old is this webpage?

Just type javascript:alert(document.lastModified) on the address bar and type enter, and a popup telling when the HTML page were created will raise!
The only limit of this trick is that dynamic pages, like .php sites or blogs, are re-created each time the user request them, thus their last modified date is refreshed to the current date. Anyway interesting…

Live walls

I just found this post… Probably one of the most amazing decorations for a new house. In a few words: think about live walls with picture changing with the higher temperature of a stove? Or a calendar that fades after the current day passed on? Well, have a look ;)

Evolution vs Creationism

This comic is an excellent explanation on the difference between Evolution and Intelligent Design.

The former is a natural and rational method, that is confirming everyday the Darwinian theory, but does not aim to do it. It just happens to be proven true at any test. May be one day we’ll need to make a deep review of the original theory.
Biologists, chemists and mathematicians work on it.

Intelligent Design is not a theory, neither a fact. It’s fruitless (with Evolution as a model we understood microbial resistance to antibiotics, we designed new drugs and developed new agricultural techniques), and never helped science to discover anything. ID is a hoax really intelligently designed. Politicians and lawers work on it.

High precision cutting board

I love cooking, and as a (wannabe) molecular biologist I also like precision in what I do. Recipes are meant to be followed with the gram precision, so…

Balance on the Cutting Board

Here you are the Cutting Board Scale. It’s easy to use: just cut what you need inside the red circle, and a digital LED display will tell you the precise amount of green peppers you cut!

Well… as fun as useless, probably.

Brainless electors?

The entire world waited for the final results of USA elections, hoping that G. W. Bush would not be elected for the second time… well, we know what happened, and in the States several sites raised to express loudly “I don’t agree” (most notably http://www.sorryeverybody.com/).

Surfing the web I found this amazing table: all the States are ordered by descending IQ, and the result is… self explicatory! :O
It seems that top-15 intelligent states voted for Kerry, while the 25 less brained states voted for Bush.

QI american states

Also, considering the cut off score of 100, the division between Kerry and Bush is neat! If you want to read more, have a look at this site.

Now I want to have this table for Italian elections… really!

Blackle, a search with google the green (black) way

“Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002

Yeah, this is quite easy to understand, black is the colour of the… turned off monitor, so requires less energy than white. But I never thought that a “darker” user-interface would be energy saving.

Someone did (several ones, really) and made a black clone of Google, calling it Blackle. I now use this as my home page, even if lacks some details as image or news searching.

This nice initiative began with this post: Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year, where the Mark Ontkush states that Google is shown on some monitor for 550,000 hours a day. Impressive. I think I’ll change some websites right now :)

Neo 1973, open-sourced iPhone

English Taking advantage of the enormous advertizing campaing for the iPhone, another technogadget is getting famous… and the contrast between Apple’s smartphone and the new one…

It’s the Neo 1973, the first phone designed to run OpenMoko. This is one of the most amazing features: it uses an open source system, with several advanced features, with Linux as a core kernel and a reducted X.org server for the graphics.

Neo 1973

iPhone’s look and feel probably will remain winning choices. But nowadays not only geeks love the freedom of choice, customizing, writing their own scripts interfacing devices etcetera… I’m curious to hear more about this smartphone, that should be available for the public in October, as I’m getting bored of closed-boxes take it as it is and forget about customizations.
